A Yard Truck Comparison: Capacity vs. Ottawa

In logistics, you need equipment that’ll do the heavy lifting. And for experienced and savvy business owners, the yard spotter truck checks every box. It is essentially a semi-tractor that moves containers and trailers within different facilities, like warehouses and cargo yards.

The yard spotter truck differs from a semi-truck and operates more like a switcher locomotive. Thanks to a hydraulic fifth wheel, it can accommodate the fast, efficient movement of trailers and containers without the operator ever leaving the cab. In fact, it can easily move three times faster than the standard tractor.

If you’re considering getting a yard truck, two of the top names in the industry are Capacity and Kalmar Ottawa. Let’s look at these two truck brands.

What is Capacity Yard Truck?

For over 45 years, the Capacity yard truck has been the go-to, preferred solution throughout railway hubs, ports, and more. While everyone’s needs can vary, the Capacity yard truck is built to be a consistent, reliable, and relentless performer.

Capacity trucks are available in two versions: TJ Series and Dura-Ride.

What is Ottawa Yard Truck?

As the first name in the industry, Kalmar Ottawa has created over 75,000 yard spotter trucks, the majority of which are still in use. The unsurpassed durability of the Ottawa yard truck helps ensure it maintains exceptional value throughout its life.

The company offers several different yard trucks and tractors.

Capacity vs. Ottawa: Frame Construction

Capacity yard trucks use preformed structural steel that is rated at 36,000 PSI. Additional options are welded to the frame, which may affect integrity.

An Ottawa yard truck’s frame is a ⅜-inch formed channel rated 50,000 PSI or 80,000 PSI on tandems. The innovative, thicker, and more durable design may have been the reason behind Ottawa’s longer truck frame warranty (7 years) than Capacity (6 years).

Capacity vs. Ottawa: Parts Replacement

If a part must be replaced on a Capacity truck, it has to be cut off. The new part has to be welded. When this occurs, it could affect the steel’s structural integrity.

Ottawa trucks have pre-punched holes in the frame with weld nuts fitted to the backside. This allows the frame to accept and accommodate enhancements and replacement parts without compromising the frame’s integrity. Ottawa allows faster and more efficient unbolting of the old part and bolting the new one.

Capacity vs. Ottawa: Cabs

There are several differences between the cabs of Capacity and Ottawa. For starters, Ottawa trucks have a completely redesigned cab and deck. Meanwhile, Capacity had the same design for several years, with the design undergoing minimal changes.

Another difference is the sliding rear door. An Ottawa truck’s door is made from durable and lightweight aluminum material, somewhat making it easier to operate. Moreover, the upper rear door design on the Ottawa has a riveted design—it’s easily replaceable if it suffers damage.

Capacity vs. Ottawa: Standard & Optional Features

While both trucks offer several options, the Ottawa’s features look more versatile.

For example, a Capacity truck’s optional Vista 66 raised roof cab has a door clearance of 66 inches. An Ottawa truck’s optional raised roof has a slightly higher clearance of 68 inches.

Capacity trucks offer a four-point air ride system that is optional. Ottawa yard trucks come with a standard three-point air ride system that reduces maintenance and improves the ride.

Moreover, as standard features, Ottawa has included tectal undercoating, formed armrest and storage pocket, rear work light, and cab side vent. You may have to pay extra if you need such qualities in a Capacity truck.
